April 2022 Book Reviews

Over the course of April I dove into the ACOTAR series! It comes as no surprise that the two that I read (A Court of Thorns and Roses and A Court of Mist and Fury) ended as 5/5 books. I will 110% be diving into the third during May.

Other than those, I also read The Immortalists, a story of “is it true, or did they make it true,” and Local Woman Missing, a thrilled/mystery with the plot twist of the century.

Overall, these stories consisted of two 5/5s, a 4/5 and a 3/5. Not bad!

Book #1: The Immortalists

Author: Chloe Benjamin

Rating: 3/5

This book was a really cool but dark concept. At the beginning of the story, four sibling children go to a fortune teller to learn the days they’ll die.

The book then breaks off into four parts and focuses on each sibling one at a time. The overarching question asks, is the fortune teller full of BS, or does knowing the date of your death inevitably make it come true?

Though I liked the concept, I gave this book 3 stars because it was overall pretty dreary. It doesn’t give you any reason to really root for the siblings, and none of them put in any work to try and change the course of what they’ve learned. Pretty frustrating.

Book #2: A Court of Thorns and Roses

Author: Sarah J. Maas

Rating: 5/5

If you already know, you KNOWWW! But I am so happy I finally gave this series a go! It follows the story of human Feyre as she gets immersed in the faerie world and has to navigate danger, curiosity, and all of the things that come with leaving everything you know behind.

This book make me happy, sad, angry, and shocked at the same time. Those last few chapters though, hollly moly.

I’m so excited to read book 3, and I can wait to read Sarah J. Maas’s other series!

Book #3: Local Woman Missing

Author: Mary Kubica

Rating: 4/5

This book is about a mother and daughter who go missing. The story jumps between multiple points of view including the mother’s, brother’s, and neighbors,’ and the prologue and first chapter are told from two additional POVs.

The entire story was really good, and I was sucked in from the fourth or fifth chapter. I’ve read mysteries before, but none that swapped POVs like this and left you utterly shocked. I felt like I should’ve seen ~it~ coming, but there’s no way to know! I could definitely see this one becoming a film.

Book #4: A Court of Mist and Fury

Author: Sarah J. Maas

Rating: 5/5

It’s hilarious, because I thought I liked Book 1, but then I read Book 2. Okay, WHAT?! I feel like I saw that coming, but not to that extreme. WHAT a good story.

At the start of this second installment of the series, Feyre finds herself coping with the rather uh, life-changing, event that took place at the end of Thorns and Roses. She’s distraught, quite literally sickened, and angry at herself despite knowing that her choice did do a lot of good for the greater cause. But at what cost?

Things are going as planned… until they’re not. And BOY, what a twist. Without giving anything away, I LOVED how this story turned, and I loved learning about the city of Velaris! This book felt a lot more descriptive when it came to the faerie world and their individual powers, and it was overall such an enjoyable book to read.

Of course, Sarah J. Maas loves a good end-of-story cliffhanger, so I’m literally counting down the seconds until I get my hands on A Court of Wings and Ruin (book 3)!

You like fantasy books, absolute edge-of-your-seat pageturners, and good old-fashioned cliffhangers.
